MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) incompatibility

The current Intaglio release, 3.9.4, hasn’t worked well so far with any of the public betas of MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra), including beta 17A352a. Whenever the Intaglio drawing is larger than the document size, scrolling doesn’t work, the image is cut off, and elements can’t be selected by clicking on them. I contacted the author of Intaglio about this problem about a month ago but I don’t think the problem’s been solved yet and I’m starting to worry that there might be a major incompatibility issue that will be difficult to fix, especially since High Sierra will be officially released soon.

I´m pretty sure Nick will update Intaglio for HighSierra - but I´m shocked about the Website where still KAGI is named as a payment processor which is dead since over a year now. Confusing.

Hi,

Apple is likely to release High Sierra any time after today. Does anyone know whether these issues have been sorted out?

Not to my knowledge. I’m using the latest public beta of High Sierra (17A360a) and Intaglio 3.9.4 still has problems.

Today (9/25) is official High Sierra release day and still no update of Intaglio. Vers. 3.9.4 still doesn’t work with the latest latest Sierra public beta, 17A362a. I’m getting quite worried that we’re at the end of the line for Intaglio.

I’ve just sent an email to the support team, asking for clarifications.

Hi All,

Nick Nallick wrote back to me:

Yes, there’s a known issue that we’re working on. Unfortunately High Sierra has regressed in at least one way that Intaglio depends on, so a workaround is needed.

I’ve been unable to open EPS files and had some general issues around navigating a document. To edit EPS files, I found a workaround is to open them in Preview and export them as a PDF. Then open the PDF in Intaglio, and use the Object -> Convert to PDF for Editing.

In fairness to Intaglio, lots of apps are having EPS issues, so it seems to be a significant change Apple made somewhere. You can see it easily by dragging an EPS into Safari, which used to show a preview, but now just has a gray page.

I really depended on Intaglio for editing, and I sure hope it’s resolved soon.

I’m now using MacOS 10.13.1 Public Beta (17B25c), and still Intaglio 3.9.4 has the same problems. It’s now been nearly 2 weeks since the official release of High Sierra. Is Nick still supporting Intaglio?

No EPS editing/import support yet. Dragging an EPS into an open windows causes the app to beachball and spike the CPU, and opening one just shows a black document.

But thanks for the continued effort on a great app. Apple seems to have hit developers pretty hard with their last several releases, and I can only guess how frustrating this all is for macOS developers.

I just upgraded to High Sierra, and I’m having the same problem with Intaglio 3.9.4 mentioned by Sam Beale: If the entire document window is visible on screen, I can select items and move them around, however, once I zoom in so that only part of the window is visible, there is a mismatch between where I click or drag and what gets selected. For example, I will have a image with text below it, and when I click on the text the image gets selected. If I zoom back out so that the full window is on screen this problem goes away.

Hopefully a fix will be forthcoming…

Will it still (irreversibly) convert and save older documents without asking? (That is not acceptable!) And is it less buggy than 3.9?

I got mine from the Intaglio Website - I guess the Appstore variant is on review by Apple which might take a few days regularly. @Ingemar. What bugs are you talking about?

3.9 crasches regularly. 3.4.4 does not. Simple as that. I just had to go back to 3.4.4 to be productive. I don’t want to lose work several times a day.

No problems at all for me with 3.9.5 (both the release version and the beta) with MacOS 10.13 and the 10.13.1 public betas, so far. Many thanks to Nick. I have to admit I got worried when the fix didn’t appear until several weeks after 10.13 started to be available.

I’d like to reach out to Nick and point out that, if he needs more support to keep the software up to date, I’d be happy to pay a small fee for the updates, every 2-3 years, say. What do you guys think? I believe that Apple is pushing (sometimes nonsensically) developers to release software on a yearly cycle, and I sympathise with developers.

„Check for updates“ for the AppStore version will just work when the update is online which is not the case right now (20th.Oct.2017) @ Ingemar. If you encounter crashes the best is to collect crash-logs+file (Console.app) and send it over to Nick - otherwise he might not know about it and it don´t will be fixed; Simple as. I can´t remember last time Intaglio crashes on me - maybe 2 or 3 times a year by evaluation experimental SVG files - but thanks to the autosave function I never lost content. @ Daniele. I guess Nick lost quite some income with the sudden bankruptcy of KAGI as his payment processor last year. Don´t have any idea why he still links to the dead site and didn´t get a replacement like FastSpring e.g. Apple´s AppStore is a nightmare regarding update management - it´s simply not available until you give it for free or release a complete new version for full payment.

So here’s my problem:

  1. The most recent version of Intaglio I have is 3.2.1.
  2. It was originally resident in a folder titled Intaglio in the Documents folder, not in the Applications folder.
  3. I forgot why it was where it was and moved the file Intaglio321 to my applications folder. I couldn’t open it from there—kept get an “Intaglio quit unexpectedly” message and re-trying doesn’t work either.
  4. I moved it back into the Intaglio folder in Documents, but now I can’t open it even from there—keep getting the same quit message.
  5. I can open the app from any of my Intaglio documents, but I can’t upgrade from these because I can’t upgrade from within the open doc.

Anyone have advice about how I can upgrade?

Still running Sierra, 10.12.6.

Many thanks,

Julie Martin
