[Pro] Duplicate Content

Hello everybody, the website above is accessible via https://brandschutz-osterburg.de and https://brandschutz-osterburg.de/index.html. Is ist sufficient in this case to place a canonical or do I have to alter the .htaccess? THX in advance Claas

This is normal. The index.html is what the Web server actually serves up if you visit the “bare” domain name. I have seen some scare tactics by SEO experts around “duplicate content” when the same page is available through two different URIs, but I doubt that this kind of duplication would be marked down as fraudulent. What the search engines are looking for is deliberate content-stuffing, like having the same exact site at two or more different top-level domains or subdomains.

Likewise, you can find my website at https://www.example.org/index.html and also simply at https://www.example.org/

In my Google Search Console, Google shows https://www.example.org/ as the “Google-selected-canonical.” Perfect. You might check your Google Search Console to see if Google has already selected their own choice for the canonical URL.
